Trick or Eat collects massive haul for local food banks
This year's Trick or Eat collection collected around three tonnes of food (equivalent to 6,000 meals) for London food banks.
The event, organised by the Local Buyers Club, saw families donating tins of food and longlife juice and milk while out trick or treating at Halloween. Households hosted collection boxes outside their homes and were added to a Trick or Eat map to help supporters know where to donate.
Jenna Fansa, who helped organise the appeal, said: "It was such a fun night - more than 90 households and businesses took part and we were moved to tears by the number of donations. People showed such kindness - donating exactly what the food banks had asked for and in such big quantities. Our thanks go to the households and businesses who supported Trick or Eat and to the public who donated so generously."
The donations have been passed on to Hackney Food Bank and to PL84U AL-SUFFA in Walthamstow.
With food and fuel prices rising, furlough coming to an end, evictions happening again and Universal Credit being reduced, Hackney Foodbank say demand now is higher than it was even at the height of the pandemic.
Tanya Whitfield, Operations and General Manager of Hackney Foodbank, said: “As the evenings start to get colder and darker, a lot of parents are struggling – it’s a choice between giving the kids a bath, putting the heating on or giving them food and that’s not ok.
“No-one should have to queue for food – everyone should be able to go and choose what to eat and drink."
