Help disadvantaged children overcome the impacts of lockdown
A charitable Islington group is on a mission to support children from disadvantaged backgrounds whose education declined during lockdown.
Islington Giving, which helps those experiencing poverty, mental illness or isolation, has launched a fundraising appeal raising money for counselling, training, school support and fun activities for young people from low-income families. Money raised will be distributed to a range of agencies offering support in the community.
According to a recent survey, 1 in 3 disadvantaged children in London have suffered with anxiety and depression since the Coronavirus lockdowns. Many suffered a greater decline in education too.
A spokesperson for Islington Giving, said: “The loss of education has not fallen evenly, and children from more disadvantaged backgrounds have experienced a greater decline in their educational outcomes. What’s more, the increased mental health problems resulting from lockdowns can prevent young people from engaging in employment, education or training opportunities.”
The appeal is being supported by the Local Buyers Club, a shop-local club offering savings at independent businesses in the area. They’re donating £5 to Islington Giving for every new member who joins for half price (£6) with the code ISGIVE.
In recent months, Islington Giving has funded several projects aimed at young people in the borough - including bicycle maintenance training sessions, a hip-hop theatre company, a floating community space in an old barge, and many more.
With 50% of primary school children living in poverty in Islington, projects like these are badly needed.
