Halloween Trick or Eat trail launches in E17 to support local food bank
Walthamstow residents are turning Halloween on its head this year as a Trick or Eat trail collects food for people in need.
Last year’s event, organised by the Local Buyers Club (a shop-local club and discount card) collected five tonnes of food (four lorries full) in neighbouring Hackney. Donations collected in E17 will go to PL84U AL-SUFFA's food bank.
Residents are urged to either host a collection box outside their homes or to dress up and follow the Trick or Eat trail - donating tins of soup, corned beef, tinned fish and longlife milk or juice to boxes in their neighbourhood.
With food and fuel prices rising, furlough coming to an end, evictions happening again and Universal Credit being reduced, food bank workers say things are looking bleak.
Saira Begum Mir, founder of PL84U AL-SUFFA, who recently received the British Citizen Award, said: “We’re feeding around 5,600 people every month. There are a lot of referrals coming in and a lot of walk-ins. The need for food parcels is high locally so this collection couldn’t be better timed.”
Local mum Jules Carey is working with the Local Buyers Club to coordinate the collections in Walthamstow. She said: “Halloween is always such a big night locally and it would be great to harness that community spirit and shift the focus a little so that, as well as having fun trick or treating, we teach our children to help people experiencing hardship.
“We’d urge families, when they’re out trick or treating to take along some tins of food to drop in collection boxes around the neighbourhood.”
PL84U AL-SUFFA takes referrals for food parcels from a host of agencies, including refuge, migrant groups, the Citizen Advice Bureau, Stella Creasy MP, Job Centre Plus, Mutual Aid and more.
