From farm-life Down Under to popular city vets
Hackney’s only independent veterinary clinic is among the businesses offering discounts to Local Buyers Club Members.
We took some time out to get to know the team and highlight what makes this local business so fabulous.
The Hackney Vet was launched in Lower Clapton Road three years ago by friends and fellow vets and Aussies Geoff Platt and Jason Stivano and they quickly built a loyal following of locals.
Geoff, who grew up on a farm near Melbourne, told the Local Buyers Club: “We’re the only vet for a mile and have been really busy since the start. Being an independent clinic has been a big draw, more than any other borough Hackney clients seek out local and independent.
“What they seem to love is that our staff is constant – unlike bigger chains, there’s no staff turnover and we’re all experienced.
“Pet ownership is soaring in Hackney – I guess that’s partly due to the massive green areas such as the marshes and parks. When we started we’d see more cats than dogs and a lot of Staffordshire Bull Terriers. Today, dog ownership is on the rise and the most popular local pet is a French Bulldog.”
More unusual patients have included the occasional sheep brought in by Hackney City Farm.
The team includes four talented vets, a visiting orthopaedic veterinary surgeon, three experienced nurses and a trainee. And they have cutting edge digital x-ray machines and anaesthetic machines.
The building, which is opposite the Round Chapel, also has separate dog and cat wards downstairs for animals which need to stay overnight and plenty of meter street parking close by.
Among the newest staff are vets Si Keirle, who in addition to a degree in Veterinary Medicine gained a Zoology degree and newly-qualified vet Lawrence Crossfield.
Hackney Vets offers Local Buyers Club members 20% off the following treatments: Vaccinations, flea and worming treatment & dental procedures (offer valid for new customers only in their first year).
